The Famous Dome on Il DuomoPosted by njsux (Shrewsbury, NJ, United States) on 29 October 2009 in Architecture and Portfolio. This dome is famous for many reasons, I'm sure, but the one that stands out in my mind is that it was built without using any internal support during its construction. How Brunelleschi did it is, I believe, something of a mystery to this day. There's a pretty good book about it called Brunelleschi's Dome. You can get an idea of the scale by looking just above the main, orange-colored dome at the base of the cupola - there are people standing there.
